Privacy Policy

CleverWords is a word game made by Misquamicut Technologies LLC (“we”, “us”). This policy covers the CleverWords apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, older versions of the app published as CodeWords, and this website. It explains what we collect, why, who helps us run things, and the choices you have.

The short version: we collect what we need to run the game with your friends, keep it safe, and keep it working. We don’t sell your personal information. You can delete your account in the app at any time.

What we collect

Your account

  • When you sign in with Apple, Google or an email link, Firebase Authentication (a Google service) gives us a user ID and, depending on the method, your email address and name. If you use Sign in with Apple’s “Hide My Email”, we only see the relay address Apple gives us.
  • You can start playing without signing in. We then create an anonymous account with just a user ID.
  • Older versions of the app also offered Facebook sign-in, which gave us your name and Facebook ID.

Your profile

  • The name you choose and, if you add one, a profile photo. Other players see both.

Your games

  • The games you play: boards, the clues you give, your guesses, turns, scores and results, in every mode (two-player, four-player, Minis and the Daily Guesser).
  • The people you play with and save, the players you block, and any private notes you keep in a game.
  • Clues are shared. The players in your game see your clues. Clues can also be chosen for the Daily Guesser or shown in Minis, where other players see them with your first name.

Chat and reports

  • Messages you send in game chat. The other players in that game can read them.
  • If you report a player or a piece of content, we keep the report, what you wrote, and the content it’s about, so we can look into it. If you’re reported, we may review your messages, clues, name and photo.

Your device

  • A push token, if you allow notifications, so we can tell you when it’s your turn, when a friend nudges you, and about new messages.
  • Usage analytics through Google Analytics for Firebase: which screens you open and what you do in the game (for example, starting or finishing a game), plus your device model, operating system, app version, language and approximate location (country or region, from your IP address). We link this to your user ID so we can understand how people play.
  • Crash reports through Firebase Crashlytics: what went wrong, your device model, operating system and app version.

On iPhone and iPad we don’t access the advertising identifier (IDFA), and we don’t track you across other companies’ apps or websites, so we never ask for tracking permission. On Android, Google’s analytics and ads tools may read your device’s advertising ID. You can reset or delete it in your Android settings.

Ads

If you’re not a member, you may see a small number of ads, shown by Google AdMob. AdMob receives information such as your IP address, device type and how you interact with the ad, to show the ad, measure it and prevent fraud. In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland we ask for your consent first, using Google’s consent message. If you don’t give it, you only see non-personalized ads, chosen by context rather than by a profile of you. Regulars members don’t see ads.

Purchases

Purchases (the Regulars membership, and Remove Ads in older versions) go through the App Store or Google Play. We never see your card details. We use RevenueCat to check what you’ve bought: it receives your CleverWords user ID and the purchase details from Apple or Google (product, price, dates, renewals). We keep a record of your purchases.

When you contact us or use this website

  • What you send us by email or through the account-deletion form.
  • This website is hosted by Vercel, which keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and browser type) for security. The website doesn’t use advertising or analytics cookies.

How we use it

  • To run the game: your account, your games, turns, chat, and matching you with other players.
  • To send notifications you’ve allowed.
  • To keep CleverWords safe: reviewing reports, removing content, and locking out abusive players.
  • To fix crashes and bugs, and to understand which features people use so we can improve them.
  • To show ads to players who aren’t members, and to provide the membership to players who are.
  • To answer you when you write to us.

If you’re in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland: we rely on our contract with you to run the game, on our legitimate interests for safety, analytics and crash reporting, on your consent for personalized ads, and on legal obligations where they apply.

Who we share it with

We don’t sell your personal information. We share it only in these ways:

  • Other players see your name, photo, clues, guesses and chat in the games you play, and your clues in the Daily Guesser and Minis.
  • Service providers who run parts of CleverWords for us, under their own privacy and security terms:
    • Google (Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Storage, Cloud Functions, Cloud Messaging, Analytics, Crashlytics, AdMob, and BigQuery for our own analysis)
    • Apple (Sign in with Apple, the App Store and push notifications)
    • RevenueCat (purchases)
    • Vercel (this website) and Resend (email)
  • For legal reasons, if the law requires it, or to protect players and the public from harm.
  • If the business changes hands, to the new owner, who would have to keep this policy’s promises.

How long we keep it

We keep your information while you have an account. Inactive accounts aren’t deleted automatically; you can delete yours whenever you like. Analytics and crash data expire on Google’s retention schedule.

Deleting your account

In the app, go to You → Delete account. It takes effect right away. You can also ask us to delete it on the web.

When you delete your account we delete your sign-in, profile photo, devices, Daily Guesser plays, Mini guesses, block list and favorites, and erase the text of your chat messages. Your name is replaced with “Deleted”. Games you played with others stay for them, with your seat shown as “Deleted”. We keep purchase records and reports about safety, and pseudonymous game statistics (gameplay with names and contact details removed). The deletion page has the details.

Your choices and rights

  • Change your name and photo in the app, under You.
  • Turn notifications off in your phone’s settings.
  • Change your ads consent in the app’s privacy settings (in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland).
  • Ask us for a copy of your information, to correct it, or to delete it, by emailing support@cleverwords.app. Depending on where you live (for example in the EU, the UK, or California), you may have these rights by law, and the right to complain to your data protection authority. We won’t treat you differently for using them.

Children

CleverWords isn’t meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child under 13 has an account, email us and we’ll delete it.

Security and where your data lives

Your information is stored with Google Cloud, mostly in the United States, and is encrypted in transit. Only the people who run CleverWords can access it, and only to operate and support the game. If you use CleverWords from outside the US, your information is transferred to the US.

Changes

If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll tell you in the app before it applies.
